It’s snowing as I write this; gentle drops of white specks give movement to what is otherwise a very calm, and still view out the window. I have no childhood memories of snow in January, given that I grew up in South Africa where summer is in full swing at this time of the year. So I think about those drinks, and fruits to get through the heat or to reenergize myself while at the beach.
Niguse Nare’s natural anaerobic coffee brings back those memories for me; of watermelon and blueberries throughout the day, and cotton candy when I used to go to the stadiums to watch cricket in Johannesburg. In short, it’s summer in a cup; an antidote, perhaps, to the enveloping thought that we still have a few months of cold weather ahead of us in the U.S.
Cherries are picked at peak ripeness. They are then placed in large barrels of water, and sealed for 56 hours. Following this, they are depulped and the mucilage is washed off to be placed on drying beds for up to 30 days.
It’s clean, juicy, and expressive.
